Physical Therapy

Physical therapy (also known as PT) involves the treatment, healing and prevention of injuries by restoring function and movement to an injured area. Proper rehabilitation is achieved under the care of a physical therapist, someone who is educated and trained to treat the entire body.

Each patient is different, and everyone responds differently to physical therapy. Patients have different types of bodies, different patterns of movement and different habits, so not all forms of therapy will work for everyone. A physical therapist is able to evaluate the unique needs of each patient to create a therapy regimen that is right for that particular individual.

There are two general types of physical therapy: passive therapy and active therapy. Healing is generally best achieved through a combination of the two.

Passive Physical Therapy:

  • Heat packs
  • Ice packs
  • Massage
  • Ultrasound
  • Nerve stimulation

Active Physical Therapy:

  • Stretching
  • Balance activities
  • Coordination drills
  • Range-of-motion exercises
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Aerobic conditioning
